Awards For Gamecube Best of Show
BEST GAME CUBE GAME
The Winner Is:

Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2
Developer: Factor 5
Publisher: LucasArts

Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 is the fastest, most furious representation of the time-honored movie trilogy ever. The undisputably accurate look of the game drew crowd after crowd of people at Nintendo's E3 booth. Even if people weren't playing, they were standing attentive over the shoulders of all the others there, marveling at what was taking place on screen. Rogue Leader also impressed much of the development community because it perfectly demonstrated the technical prowess behind GameCube. For both reasons, Rogue Leader gets our top pick and is one of our most anticipated titles scheduled for the launch of GameCube.

Eternal Darkness's switch from the N64 is something that took us by surprise. We had a hunch it would be moving to GameCube, but had no idea how much of an upgrade it was going to receive. Visually, it was one of the best looking titles at E3 with so much detail even the characters animatedly reacted to environmental effects such as popping torches. But, even more importantly is the sheer potential Eternal Darkness has as a psychological thriller. Silicon Knights isn't here to play games, so to speak. By the end of Eternal Darkness they want you to have been profoundly affected by a unique experience; you'll even experience Latin and the dark words of Edgar Allen Poe. It is in this uniqueness that Eternal Darkness is an impending success. While Silicon Knights didn't want to ruin the story, they demonstrated a few insanity effects and mind-teasers that had us drooling with anticipation. Could something as harmless as answering a ringing phone affect your sanity? Should you have fought that zombie, even though you won? These are the kinds of questions you'll have to ask yourself. In short, Eternal Darkness's great promise lies deep in the heart of its gameplay -- an experience we can't wait to indulge in.

It looks a LOT like the actual movies. So close that it's hard to believe, and it runs at 60 frames per second pushing unheard of amounts of geometry, textures, and lighting. Then there are the pristine animations, and brilliant particle effects. You couldn't ask for much more.

Best of Show: GameCube Technological Excellence

The Winner Is:

Luigi's Mansion
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo

Despite the fact that Luigi's Mansion had a relatively low polygon count on the world, the other effects were simply amazing --namely the lighting, shadowing, particle effects and animations. There weren't many titles on the show floor that were demonstrating such powerful effects as the transparency in the ghosts or the ability to pull a curtain with the suction of a vacuum. Nintendo is definitely pushing GameCube more than one might think at first glance.
